In the wake of the global recession, companies all over the UK have been tightening their collective belts. This often means a freeze on new hiring, fewer bonuses, and a smaller travel budget. In this brief article we will discuss company management and its role in contemporary business. No matter the size of the business, company management is an invaluable department. It is responsible for managing the day-to-day needs of its salesmen and executives who regularly travel overseas. This includes airfares, hotel accommodation, and various travel expenditures. Why is this important? Most large businesses and corporations have employees whose job it is to visit international branches. These trips can last anywhere from a weekend to a month to a year. As you might expect, it is the longer, extended stays that company management teams tend to focus on first. Should they rent apartments in Rome (more...) Gum disease is one of the most pervasive oral problems in the UK. Reliable estimates put the proportion of people who will suffer from gum disease at some point at over 90 percent. Fortunately, only about ten percent of those cases will require treatment. The most serious form of gum disease is called periodontitis, which literally means an inflammation around the teeth. If left untreated, periodontitis can lead to pain and tooth loss. Like all gum diseases, it is caused by bacteria that accumulate in the mouth. The disease begins as a relatively minor condition known as gingivitis. Gingivitis is the most common form of gum disease. It causes swelling and redness and in severe, untreated cases, gingivitis may result in bleeding. A good gum disease guide should tell you everything you need to know about it. (more...) There are several important things you should know before you buy shares. While there is an obvious trend toward online brokers, a lot of people lose a lot of money that way. Though trading securities is probably not a science, it does require a great deal of experience. At the very least, it is important to know the basic fees. The most common fee is called the dealing cost, which is how much a client will be asked to pay for buying or selling stock. As a general rule, dealing costs are cheaper the less contact you have with an actual human being. For example, if you place trades on your own on the internet, you will probably only pay between 6 and 12 pounds per 100 shares bought or sold. Next we have company management administrative charges. These fees are typically assessed at the end of a quarter or every three months. Once again, these costs vary depending on the amount of contact a client has with a broker. (more...) Snow skiing is one of the world's oldest sports. It began in Europe at least five thousand years ago. We know this because equipment from that period has been recovered in France and Switzerland. Incredibly, the sport is still growing after all these years. Of course, when people first started skiing, it was not a recreational activity, but rather a way to get from A to B. For people who lived at high altitudes in the French Alps, strapping on a pair of skis was the easiest way to get down hill. Getting uphill was another matter entirely. Skiers typically used a pair of snowshoes and slowly climbed back up. Fortunately, the French ski holidays of today do not included snowshoes. Guests can simply take a ski lift and be at the top of the tallest peak in about a quarter of an hour. On the run, a skier spends three times as much time getting down as he does going up, thanks to the ski lift. (more...) It is estimated that the average resident of the UK moves once every six years. Why so much? Well, there are several reasons. One explanation is that there are more people working these days. As recently as the 1960s, only about half of the women in the UK worked outside of the home. Today, that number is at 80 percent. Since the number one reason people relocate is employment, the more people working, the more people will have to move. Moving is seldom an enjoyable experience. Not only does it mean leaving a place you may have felt comfortable in, but the amount of work involved can be overwhelming. The only thing worse that moving to another town is moving to another country. In addition to packing boxes and arranging for pickup, if you are moving overseas, you will have to have almost everything shipped. Not to mention the fact that you will have to fill out customs reports, insurance forms, and coordinate a delivery date. Our advice? Call an international moving company. Also known as international removal companies, these trained professionals will handle as much or as little of your move as you like. At the very least, we recommend hiring them to coordinate the shipping and fill out the forms. They will ensure that your furniture and personal belongs arrive when you do in your new residence. What I have learnt is that many people think they are born managers whereas the art and style of good management is often one that has to be learned and studied in a good management training programme. Those who are confident of their own natural management skills are often sadly deluded. They often keep themselves at a distance from their employees and are unapproachable. These are the type of people who believe that their employees have nothing to teach them and do not encourage them to make decisions or think for themselves. At the other end of the scale though are those who use the latest management techniques and programmes by rote. They think that by rigidly applying the latest management school of thought they can succeed. They use buzz words and a more friendly and open style of management. (more...) If you are going on holiday in the next few months, you will probably want to look at ways of saving as much money as possible on your trip and there are various ways that you can economise in order to leave as much spending money as possible. One obvious way is your holiday cash – by looking around and making a currency exchange comparison you can make considerable savings and get more money for your pound. If you leave it until you are abroad and use the cash point with your credit card you are going to get charged hefty extra charges as well as an unfavourable exchange rate. (more...) When the economy stumbles, some industries are hit harder than others. One sector that is invariably affected by economic slowdowns is the airline industry. Since vacations are often viewed as luxuries when times get tight, people tend to put them off or cancel them altogether. Airports in the UK reported a 7.4 percent drop in total passengers in 2009. It was the largest annual decline since World War II! Of particular concern to the airlines is the precipitous drop in business travel. Business trips fell by an astonishing 15 percent last year. Why so much? When the economy contracts, businesses must take immediate steps that will help them survive. This means cutting budgets to the bone and getting rid of all the unnecessary expenses. Business travel and company marketing are typically the first items on the list for company management departments. (more...) In my many years in the business arena, I have worked with top international CEO's on their company strategy as well as having the opportunity to have a direct say on the internal strategy of the company I worked for. I have seen the dangers of both paying too little and too much attention to any business strategy change programme. I have seen multi-million dollar companies with a frightening lack of regard for strategy. They live from one day to the next, ducking and diving and seem to have no plans for the future. I have sat in meetings with very successful companies, where the owners did not even have a two year plan. They simply had no vision for the future which is terrifying in a company of that stature. I have also seen the opposite end of the spectrum – those companies who are so intent on creating and following strategy plans that they are completely immobilised. The top managers are focused on creating strategy giving them no time to run the business. (more...) Running a company in today's smaller and more modern world involves many things that companies of even twenty years ago did not need to consider. There are things such as stricter regulations, health and safety concerns and others. Another thing that companies have to deal with nowadays, is that an increasing amount of business is done with other companies from Europe. This involves paying Euro invoices, and dealing with different time zones and work practices. If working with foreign companies, then it will be wise to keep an eye on currency rates in order that you get the maximum value for any purchase and make the most profit on any sale. Coming up with terms of sale is a part of this. You must price any product to take into account changes in currency. (more...) If you are a global company with offices in several countries, you are likely to be facing high hotel and flight costs and many company bosses find it more cost effective to buy a company apartment if they frequently have staff travelling to a particular location - it makes good business sense. It is fairly easy to do, especially if you have a local office as they will already be familiar with the rules and regulations. You can opt for a furnished property management agreement with a local company or take care of it yourself which ever you are best placed to do. There is the obvious financial benefit as it will work out cheaper in the long run than hiring expensive hotels for many people for weeks on end. There is also the probability that it will appreciate in value – hotels are dead money, but at least you are investing in an apartment. (more...) Managing a company can be challenging, but in a good way. Small businesses often have a completely different dynamic to big companies; here are some creative techniques for managing a small enterprise successfully. Thanks to communications technology, the way companies and businesses are being structured has changed drastically over the past few years. Today, it is possible to have employees working from their home. There are advantages as well as disadvantages to this, but the fact that it is possible allows for effective management of resources, particularly work space.
Micromanagement gets people down. Individual morale and effectiveness is like house prices, it fluctuates, so allowing room for personal management of time and tasks is important in order to get the best out of your employees. (more...)
